St Joseph's Catholic Primary School

Purple Group

At St Joseph's, we are proud to use Read Write Inc as our systematic phonics and early reading programme. Developed by Ruth Miskin, RWI provides a structured and engaging approach that helps children learn to read accurately and fluently while developing a love of reading from an early age.

Through daily lessons, pupils are taught to recognise sounds, blend them into words, and build confidence in both reading and writing. The programme supports every child at their own pace, ensuring that no one is left behind and that all children experience success.

By using Read Write Inc., we aim to give our pupils the strongest possible foundation in literacy, setting them up for future learning and a lifelong enjoyment of books.

In Purple Group...

Children in the Read Write Inc. Purple Group are becoming more confident and fluent readers as they begin to read longer texts and tackle a wider range of words. At this stage, pupils continue to practise Set 2 sounds and are introduced to some Set 3 sounds, helping them to recognise different spelling patterns for the same sounds. They work on reading words speedily, improving their fluency and expression so that their reading sounds more natural and confident.

Comprehension skills are developed through discussion about stories, characters, and new vocabulary. In writing lessons, children use their growing phonics knowledge to spell accurately and to write clear sentences using basic punctuation, such as capital letters and full stops. They also start to experiment with joining ideas using simple connectives and adding more detail to their writing.

By the end of the Purple Group, children are becoming more fluent and expressive readers and more confident writers, ready to move on to the next level of Read Write Inc.

In Purple Group, the children are currently building their confidence in recognising, reading and using the set 2 and 3 sounds.
